Epimedium (Horny Goat Weed)

Introduction
Epimedium herb or, as it is known throughout the herbal marketplace "Horny Goat Weed" is a small ground bearing shrub with broad heart shaped leaves that resemble ground ivy.
Commonly found in Asian medical communities and street side markets, it is often referred as a "Yang Tonic" producing a warm almost euphoric effect on the body.
Not much study has been documented and because of recent popularity we can expect more investigation and coverage of this unique botanical. Epimedium is commonly used as an aphrodisiac and assists in relieving sexual dysfunction in both men and women.

Biochemical constituents
Icarrin, linolenic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid, sterols, benzene, tannin, and vitamin E

Effects
It stimulates the production of androgen (sexual) hormones with no found effect on estrogen. It has been applied to men suffering from impotence and low sperm count. And has been consumed by women who suffer from a decreased sexual motivation. A tonic of this plant is said to warm the body for both men and women.

Parts Used
Leaves Only
Makes a fine tea, an encapsulated powder, or liquid herbal extract

Summary
As far as we can tell Epimedium is a rather safe, and benign herb. The attributes associated with it have not yet been proven by science or substantiated through clinical research. Epimedium is a fun herb that can be applied to most dishes. The Chinese frequently chew it and it can be added to soaps, sautéed and included with many cuisines. Although lacking in definable taste, one can be creative with its consumption.
