Red Alaea Salt Profile

Trade Name
Red Alaea Salt, Red Hawaiian Salt, and Red Salt

Origin
Hawaii, USA

Introduction
Salt is one of histories most sought after commodities, and is still used as a currency in some parts of the world. Hawaiians have used the Red Alaea salt for centuries in sacred ceremonies to cleanse and purify tools and canoes. Unlike most salt which is mined, Red Alaea is sea salt that is created through natural evaporation when it is trapped in tidal pools and mixes with red volcanic clay. The red color itself comes from the extremely high amount of iron in the clay. The salt is said to contain 80 different naturally occurring minerals.

Medicinal Properties
Native Hawaiians have used it for centuries to stop bleeding and hemorrhaging from cuts and minor injuries. Historically it was mixed with Noni leaves to create a mixture thought helpful in the prevention of certain types of cancer. Traditionally, Hawaiian women as they reach their late 40's and 50's increase their intake of the salt as it is thought to help with the onset of menopause. The typical constituents for each lot of Red Alaea sold is as follows
